A n introductory music activity to introduce the concept of the beat versus the rhythm. The beat is a steady pulse, like a heartbeat. It sets the tempo/speed of the music. When you take the beat and divide it up in to patterns that is called rhythm.
Clapping on the Beat

Show the students how to keep a beat by clapping a steady beat with your hands and counting 1,2,3,4. Invite students to follow along by clapping, snapping, or patting.

Maintain the beat for about 1 minute. Encourage the group to stay together very steadily without speeding up. Try to sound like one pulse.
